Frequently Asked Questions

1What is Helping Hands?
Helping Hands is a faith-based non-profit family resource center in Wells County. While Helping Hands once began as a crisis pregnancy center in January 2013, we found the term “crisis pregnancy” to be misleading. We believe it is not the pregnancy that brings the crisis; the crisis comes from the factors and circumstances present around the pregnancy. Such circumstances extend far beyond this moment in a family’s journey, and require support that is ongoing, relational, and an example of the love of Jesus Christ. Helping Hands has evolved our approach to not only offer support in pregnancy, but to intentionally serve the father, mother, and children of all ages.
2What geographic area does Helping Hands serve?
Helping Hands primarily serves the local communities of Wells, Adams, Allen, Blackford, and Huntington Counties. Though we don’t have stipulations on where clients reside so we welcome families from any county.
3Do you just help pregnant women?
We do serve and support expectant mothers (and fathers), such as early detection pregnancy tests, verified by an RN. If the test is positive, we can perform an ultrasound as early as 6 weeks after conception (but not past 24 weeks) and offer additional classes geared towards family planning and preparation (such as Safe Sleep, Expectant Parent class, childbirth education, and more). If the result was negative, we can provide educational resources to help you make decisions for your future. However, our services extend beyond pregnancy. We offer ongoing support to men, women, and children.
4What about the fathers?
We feel equally as strong about serving the fathers as we do the mothers. We have a Men’s Coordinator on staff who can meet one-on-one in a confidential setting, in addition we have male volunteers who facilitate a weekly men’s small group.
5What kind of other services do you offer?
Our services are a multi-faceted approach, including our OB medical services, parent and children’s educational classes, community groups, material and food assistance, direct advocacy, and referrals to community resources.
6What about adoption and abortion?
We provide accurate information on both adoption and abortion. In regard to adoption, we can connect women with adoption resources and organizations, as well as help them with the decision-making process. We do not perform abortions or make referrals for them. We do provide education resources about abortions and the risk factors that could ensue after having one.
7Are your services confidential?
Absolutely. All of our services and conversations are kept confidential. The only time confidentiality must be broken is if you are in danger or a danger to others. If you are a minor pursuing OB medical care, we will make a plan to help you tell your parents about your visit if medically necessary.
8Are all your services free?
Yes, all of our services are offered completely free of charge, ensuring that cost is never a barrier for those in need. This is made possible through the unwavering generosity and support of our community.
9What makes you different from other resources in our community?
Helping Hands is different because of the way we operate - our services are relational and open-ended, as opposed to being transactional and isolated. We operate as a faith-based organization with the model of Jesus as a prime example for how we approach relationships with grace, truth, and love.
10Why is Helping Hands needed in our community?
In rural communities, accessibility to necessary resources for a family to reach self-sufficiency and thrive are limited. Helping Hands strives to empower men, women, and children to have abundant life and eternal hope as we work to offer free services, bridge gaps in their access to resources, and strengthen their skills and support systems.
